Who Says TV isn't Educational

OK I admit it, I love a good 90s teen drama mixed with some vampires. And what better wau to get that fix in then to watch one of the biggest cult classics of the late 90s. Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

The show depicts a teen girl (Sarah Michelle Gellar) who is chosen to be a slayer of vampires and save the human way of life in a beautiful small town in California. The show ran from 1997 through 2003 with a spin off show staring the beautiful Angel (Buffy's vampire boyfriend/demon enemy, your going to have to watch the show to understand).

Not only is Buffy filled with kick ass fighting scenes (in which she rocks! yay girl power!). But it is also full of stories of love, life, and friendship, mixed with some mystical beings. Fun to watch and hard to stop watching Buffy will grab your attention from the first episode.

Below are a few things I have learned from watching Buffy.

Life Lessons

1. Friends are important: Where would we be without friends? Well, Buffy would be dead that is for certain. In the show Buffy befriends all types of characters, from humans to vampires to werewolves. This is a good life lesson for all of us, it doesn't matter what our differences are but what matters is that we have each others back and we are there for each other. She also befriends some of her worst enemies which in my book stands out as a true character quality in her as she is able to see past the things that happened in the past and focus on the present and future.

2. Always carry a big stick: Now I mean this more metaphorically than physically but in the show she does always carry her stake with her as she needs to be prepared for anything. In real life I feel we should always face each day prepared for whatever life may throw at us. Whether that me a lay off, a car accident, a marriage proposal (ok I wanted to throw something happy in there) whatever it might be we should be prepared to handle it with grace and ease. This may not always pan out the way we would like but we should face each day prepared for anything.

3. Always bring humor to the table: One of the best things about Buffy is her ability to bring humor into any bad situation. Sometimes it is just a silly one liner that makes you crack a smile and sometimes it is a full fledged rant about something that makes you laugh out loud. Whatever the situation I feel it is always good to bring in a little humor, smiling and laughing are good for the body, mind, and spirit.

4. Books are good:Throughout the entire series of Buffy she and her friends are constantly searching through massive volumes and old texts (yes sometimes the Internet net as well) to find information to help them kill whatever it is planning on destroying the earth. Books are useful, books bring us all kinds of knowledge. It is good to remember the written word and to not simply rely on TV and the news to tell us what we need to know.

5. Never be afraid to Love:Love is an intense emotion. Love motivates people to do all kinds of crazy things (some good some bad) but in the end love moves us. For Buffy it was no different. She fell in love with the one "person" she was not supposed to, a vampire. The road was rocky and yea it didn't really work out how a fairytale would but love was there. She was not afraid to love that was what gave Buffy her spirit.

6. Learn from your mistakes: Life is about learning. If we do not learn from our experiences and mistakes we are bound to repeat them. Buffy and her friends make tons of mistakes. Some more than others but the lesson here is that they always learn from there mistakes and try their best not to repeat them. They are there for each other when they mess up and there to try and figure out what went wrong. The point is to never stop learning.

7. Laugh at yourself: Laughter is important, it releases endorphins that help us feel better and fight off sickness. Laughter is one of the spices of life. It is so very important to be able to laugh at life and at yourself. Sometimes that is hard as we tend to be harder on ourselves than on other people but it is so very crucial to be able to laugh at our silly mistakes and trips and falls. Laughter is good!

I too love Buffy. Until now I never thought of learning something from this show but you're right many people could learn all of these things from watching it. Up, awesome and interesting.

BtVS is one of the best shows ever! There is nothing like it. Joss Whedon is a god!

I thought it was going to be something silly, but you pulled it off well. It's a nice mix of seriousness and humor.

My husband and I are in the middle of watching Buffy for the first time, thanks to Netflix. I'm sentimental about the 90s and have really been enjoying it. This is a great tribute to the show.
